Every year on the 5th of May, people all over the USA celebrate this colorful festival, popularly known as Cinco de Mayo.
What is Cinco de Mayo and why it is celebrated?
This day celebrates the date when the Mexican army gained victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the France-Mexican War in 1862.
Even though this festival is a relatively minor occasion in Mexico, in the United States particularly Cinco de Mayo has progressed into a tribute of Mexican heritage and culture, especially in areas where there are a large number of Mexican-American populations. Even though the Battle of Puebla wasn’t a major strategic win in the overall war against the French, it still represented a massive symbolic victory for the Mexican government and uplifted the resistance movement against Napoleon even further. Within Mexico though, this festival is mainly observed in the state of Puebla, where this unlikely victory had occurred, but there are other parts of the country that like to participate in the celebrations as well.
Amongst the many traditions observed during Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, the military parades stand out the most. These parades recreate the Battle of Puebla and other festive events but for most Mexicans, this is just another day as there is no official federal holiday. In the US – particularly in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston, excitements are high as revelers mark the occasion with mariachi, parades, parties, music and Mexican folk dancing. There is an array of traditional Mexican food served such as Mole Poblano and Tacos. Even though many non-natives confuse Cinco de Mayo with the Mexican Independence Day, it is indeed not the case, since Mexico gained independence from the Spanish colonial government 50 years before the Battle of Puebla in 1810.
Really anyone can celebrate Cinco de Mayo since Mexican-Americans are pretty inclusive when it comes to celebrations.
