Car Maintenance Tips
When to get your engine oil changed
Even though you might have heard people say that you should change the oil every 3,000 miles, improved technology and safety standards mean most modern manufacturers recommend having it done between 5,000 and 7,500 miles. However, you must understand that these estimates rely on general driving habits and don’t consider extreme conditions. If you have long commutes, live in an area with extreme temperatures, frequently drive in heavy traffic, or haul heavy loads, you might want to go in earlier to be safe.
On the flip side, if you drive infrequently, you can get away with going longer between oil changes. Finally, the older your vehicle gets, the more you might need to get the oil changed, since air and compressed fuel can lead to grime and soot buildup, necessitating more frequent cleaning.
How often to rotate your tires
Depending on whether the vehicle you’re driving is a front, rear, or an all-wheel drive, the tires will wear at different rates. The driven wheels have more work to do and often exhibit quicker rates of wear. For example, a front-wheel-drive car uses its hard-working front wheels to steer, brake and put the power down to the pavement (all while carrying the added weight of a front-mounted engine and transaxle).
By tire rotation, you give them a chance to even out their wear and get extended life out of your tires. Have them rotated about 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or at least every time you go for an oil change. If your owner’s manual states that your car doesn’t need new oil that frequently, then plan on a tire rotation at least once every six months.
How to change the air filter in your car
The engine air filter is located under the hood of the car. The purpose of an engine air filter is that it cleans the air by entering your engine and protecting its sensitive parts from debris and dust. The air filter box should be easily identifiable and opens by releasing the latches or the tabs by hand. Some air filter boxes may require a screwdriver or socket set to open.
- Safety first:
Park your vehicle on a flat, dry surface. Open the hood and secure it.
- Locate and open housing:
First, Locate the air filter housing. To open the air filter housing, be aware that it is likely secured with clamps that can be undone with your hands, but sometimes you might need a screwdriver or small ratchet to open the housing.
- Remove the oil air filter
Remove the oil air filter and any debris. Note how the old air filter is installed. You’ll want to replicate this when installing the new air filter.
- Install the new air filter
Install the new air filter. Match the direction and placement of the old housing. Close the air filter housing and secure it the way it was before. That’s all there is to get fresh air into your engine!
